History
DOCUMENTED: Toftaholm's recorded history begins in 1389 when the estate was held by Jöns Skötta, later ennobled as Stenbock. A fortified manor was built on nearby Stenhusholmen in the 1400s; for centuries the property remained tied to the influential Stenbock family. Tradition holds that Gustav Vasa visited the estate and met his future wife Katarina Stenbock through this family network. The main residence was rebuilt after a devastating fire in the 1800s; the present manor house dates from 1871. Den Gyllene Abborren (The Golden Perch), the historic inn on the estate, traces to 1640 and is among the oldest preserved structures on the property. Today Toftaholm operates as a manor hotel beside Vidöstern, popular with history visitors and paranormal enthusiasts alike.
Legends
THE LEGEND OF MATS (folklore — central to estate storytelling): In the 1700s a servant named Mats fell in love with the count's daughter. When the count arranged her marriage to another nobleman, Mats disappeared during the wedding festivities. He was later found dead, having taken his own life in a manor guest room. His grave is said to lie near Mats-stenen on the estate. Folklore holds that Mats never left Toftaholm. FOLKLORE & GUEST REPORTS (not scientifically verified): Footsteps in empty corridors, sudden cold spots, night sounds, doors opening, a male presence, and experiences linked to Room 324 — the manor's own materials describe Mats as a friendly spirit who may appear behind women and lightly touch a shoulder. Haunted Sweden presents witness accounts and hotel tradition separately from documented history. NOTABLE AREAS: (1) Room 324 — signature paranormal hotspot in stories. (2) Main manor — historic corridors and guest rooms. (3) Mats-stenen — grave site in the legend. (4) Den Gyllene Abborren — inn since 1640. ATMOSPHERE: Forest, lake, candlelit dining, quiet nights. FUTURE HAUNTED SWEDEN MISSION: overnight in Room 324, EVP, night photography, Mats-stenen visit, staff interviews — premium potential EXTREMELY HIGH. BEST CONDITIONS: autumn fog, rain, winter darkness, weekday overnight stays.
