History

Carlstens Fästning was ordered after the Treaty of Roskilde in 1658 to secure Sweden's new west coast, commanding Marstrand harbour and the sea approaches. Construction continued for over two hundred years until around 1860, carried out largely by prisoners in the harsh Marstrandsarbete system — murderers, thieves, counterfeiters, and political criminals from across Sweden forced into punishing labour with chains, iron balls, and restraints sometimes exceeding thirty kilograms. Historical accounts describe starvation, illness, high mortality, and brutal conditions in preserved prison sections. The fortress saw Scandinavian warfare including capture by Danish-Norwegian forces in 1677 and again during Tordenskjold's famous 1719 attack, with bombardment, surrender controversy, and enduring military myth. It later stood as one of Sweden's most notorious prisons before becoming a major heritage landmark on Marstrandsön.

Legends

Ghost tours and mystery events build on a long reputation for atmosphere. Visitors report feeling watched, footsteps on stone stairs, cold spots, unexplained sounds in cells and dungeons, shadow figures in towers, and unease in underground rooms — often linked to former prisoners. Notable areas include the prison cells (emotionally heavy holding spaces), dungeon sections, fortress towers with shadow folklore, and the Walk of Sighs (historic prisoner route). Sea fog, island isolation, dark tunnels, and wind through corridors contrast sharply with sunny harbour views — one of western Sweden's most cinematic haunted fortresses after dark.
