History

Solberga Prästgård in Kode has roots in the 1500s as a priest residence in southern Bohuslän. The site is inseparable from the murder of priest Herr Arne in 1586, when he and members of the household were killed in a violent attack that became one of the region's most notorious historical crimes. Church records and visitation documents mention the parish and priestly sites across centuries. The current main building was erected in 1787 on historically significant ground linked to earlier vicarages. The tragedy later inspired Selma Lagerlöf's 1904 novel Herr Arnes Penningar — one of Sweden's most famous literary treatments of a historical ghost story — and helped fix Solberga in national cultural memory beyond local folklore alone.

Legends

Many associate the property with a lingering presence after the 1586 deaths. Visitors report heaviness around the grounds, unusual atmosphere, feelings of being watched, and strong emotional weight near the former priest residence. Folklore grew through generations around Herr Arne and the murdered household, feeding books, theatre, film, and ghost stories. Notable areas include the historic grounds (earlier priest residences), the 1787 vicarage (core of local legend), and the surrounding landscape with old church environment and traditional Bohuslän countryside — especially atmospheric in fog, rain, and autumn twilight.
