History
Falkenbergs Borgruin — originally Falkenbergshus — was built in the late 1200s when Halland belonged to Denmark, becoming one of the region's most important medieval fortifications. The fortress controlled river access and trade on the Ätran and played a role in conflicts between Denmark and Sweden. It was destroyed during Engelbrekt's rebellion in 1434 and never rebuilt. Large sections were later lost to stone removal and railway construction, but the remaining ruins beside Hamngatan anchor centuries of regional history.
Legends
Ätrajungfrun is the site's signature story: during an attack a young maiden hid beneath the castle with treasure; when the structure collapsed she was trapped underground and, according to folklore, remains there still. A magical rooster guards the hidden hoard — if Falkenberg is threatened again, it will crow and awaken her to save the town. Visitors report feeling watched near the ruins, strange silence, unease after dark, unexplained sounds by the river, and tales of chambers beneath the stones. Evening fog, the medieval setting, the historic bridge, and the old town amplify the mystery.
