History

DOCUMENTED: Home Hotel Grand (historically Grand Hotel Helsingborg; later Clarion Grand Hotel) stands at Stortorget 8 in central Helsingborg, Skåne. Hotel operations began in 1926 (inaugurated 8 March 1926) and it remains one of the city's oldest continuously operating hotels. ARCHITECTURE & ORIGIN: The plot (earlier linked to Hotel Munthe) was bought in 1917 by AB Skånska Handelsbanken for a monumental bank palace designed by architect Ernst Stenhammar. After bank consolidations made a new bank palace unnecessary, and amid Helsingborg's hotel shortage, plans were converted to a hotel; drawings were modified by August Stoltz. The result is a strict National Romantic facade in dark Helsingborg brick with sandstone detailing — among the city's most monumental examples of the style, and largely intact externally. Helsingborg's 2002 central conservation programme classifies the building as particularly valuable (äldre PBL 3:12). ROLE: For decades a meeting place for travellers, business guests and festive events (grand banquet rooms until a major interior rebuild around 1980). Branding evolved from Grand Hotel to Clarion Grand Hotel within the Choice/Strawberry family, and is today marketed as Home Hotel Grand. DARK HISTORY CONTEXT: Haunted Sweden has not found verified court or police records confirming a 1920s murder or disappearance in Room 585. Any guest tragedies or personal dramas that may have occurred in a busy city hotel over a century remain ordinary historical possibilities — not automatically proof of hauntings. Keep the 1926 building and hotel history separate from the Room 585 legend below.

Legends

FOLKLORE (not historically verified): Local and hotel tradition says that in the 1920s a man checked into the new Grand Hotel with his lover; his wife discovered the affair; the lover then disappeared without explanation — and her spirit is said never to have left Room 585 on the fifth floor ("the guest who never checked out"). Some retellings escalate to a jealousy crime; Haunted Sweden treats the entire origin story as folklore unless primary sources appear. WITNESS REPORTS & MEDIA (anecdotal, not scientifically verified): Guests and staff have long described feeling watched in Room 585; ice-cold drafts; claims of being pushed from the bed at night; lights switching on and off; curtains moving without clear cause; strange noises in empty corridors; and an uneasy presence on the fifth floor. Around 2009, Helsingborgs Dagblad, Expressen and DI covered stories that airline (SAS) crew preferred to avoid the fifth floor after alleged nocturnal disturbances; the floor was renovated — hotel management publicly emphasised upgrade quality as the main reason, while marketing staff also discussed the ghost reputation. Strawberry/Home Hotels publish the Room 585 story in their haunted-hotels features. SPECIAL AREAS: Room 585 (primary hotspot in folklore); fifth floor (most reported experiences); historic corridors (footsteps and unusual sounds); lobby (historic city-hotel atmosphere). ATMOSPHERE: Elegant early-20th-century hotel character, quiet corridors after midnight, views across Stortorget, classic overnight ambience — one of Sweden's best-known haunted hotel stays. INVESTIGATION IDEAS: overnight in Room 585; fifth-floor EVP; history vs folklore comparison; guest-experience comparison; Haunted Sweden after midnight. BEST CONDITIONS: overnight stay, rainy evenings, winter darkness, quiet weekdays, late-night sessions. Keep DOCUMENTED hotel history separate from FOLKLORE and witness anecdotes above.

Safety

Active hotel — book only through official channels (Home Hotel Grand / Strawberry). Respect guests, staff, fire rules and night quiet. Do not film or investigate in corridors or other guests' rooms without permission; Room 585 and fifth-floor requests depend on availability. Lobby and restaurant are public-facing but still respect privacy.
