History

DOCUMENTED: Åmåls Stadshotell at Kungsgatan 9 (kvarteret Liljan Mindre) occupies one of Åmål's most central plots. Municipal and heritage sources record that buildings on the site burned three times: after Norwegian troops ravaged the young town in 1645; in April 1809 when commerce advisor Bengt Norström's house was lost; and on 15 January 1902 when the previous city hotel and Hammargården were destroyed in a major fire that damaged much of the old town. The current hotel was designed by architect A. Ture Stenberg and built 1903–1904; opening was delayed when an acetylene lighting plant exploded on 29 November 1904, and the hotel finally opened in April 1905. It became a listed historic building (byggnadsminne) on 17 April 1978. Later changes include 1940s–1950s exterior simplification, a 1960s north extension, municipal ownership and renovation from 1999, and operation today with roughly thirty rooms plus preserved stairwells, ballroom and dining halls. Legends

FOLKLORE & WITNESS REPORTS (not scientifically verified): Swedish press (e.g. Nya Wermlands-Tidningen) has described multiple people — including comedian Babben Larsson — reporting strange experiences at the hotel: door handles moving, cutlery falling by itself, footsteps in empty corridors, whispers, feelings of being watched, doors opening or closing, and unexplained cold sensations, often linked to older wings and night hours. Haunted Sweden presents these as subjective accounts and urban hotel folklore, not proven paranormal activity. No single historical death on the property is verified here as a named haunting cause; emotional residue from generations of guests, fires and rebuilds is interpretive. NOTABLE AREAS (atmosphere / stories): (1) Historic guest corridors — main overnight focus. (2) Older hotel sections and staircases — traditional setting for reported experiences. (3) Ballroom and dining rooms — preserved period interiors. (4) Exterior and Kungsgatan at night — urban historic mood. SCORING (editorial): Visual 7.5/10, Historical value 8/10, Folklore strength 7/10, Paranormal reputation 6.5/10, Overnight potential 8/10. FUTURE HAUNTED SWEDEN MISSION: overnight stay, EVP in corridors, night photography, staff interviews, local archive research — premium potential MEDIUM–HIGH. BEST CONDITIONS: autumn evenings, rain, winter darkness, quiet weekdays, licensed overnight stay.
