History

DOCUMENTED: Hôtel Eggers occupies a listed corner at Drottningtorget 2–4, ~78 steps from Göteborg Central Station. In 1859, the year after the station opened, traktörskan Wilhelmina Schmidt established Jernvägshotellet for rail travellers — among Sweden's earliest purpose-built traveller lodging. L.E. Lindblad later ran it as Hotel Christiania; Emil Eggers joined as night porter, married into the family, and bought the business in 1883, expanding to a three-storey hotel reopened 5 November 1894 with electric light, private bathrooms and in-room telephones. Son Axel Eggers managed from 1910 until his death in 1942; his wife Ebba Eggers (née spritkassörska at the hotel) took over until 12 February 1948 when she died in an aviation accident in Denmark with multiple fatalities. Göteborg stad had acquired the property in 1944; afterward advocates Hilding and Hans Brodén, then the Ramén family, and later owners continued operations. The hotel cites guests from royalty and artists to diplomats and spies during both world wars; parts of the building date to 1820 with older city-wall remnants below. Today ~69 individually styled rooms, conference spaces, restaurant and bar preserve sekelskiftes character. Sources: hoteleggers.se history pages, folk o folk, hotel filmography list.

Legends

EBBA EGGERS (folklore — not verified as paranormal): Gothenburg's signature hotel ghost. After Axel Eggers' death (1942), Ebba ran Hôtel Eggers until her fatal 1948 crash; local stories say she never truly left — a kindly female presence checking that 'everything is managed correctly' (hotel and media tone). ROOM 397: The room number most associated with Ebba sightings in haunted-city guides and guest lore; also used as a film location (e.g. Fyra år till) — the hotel does not officially market a 'haunted room,' but folklore consistently links 397 to the legend. WITNESS REPORTS & MEDIA (unverified): woman seen in or near 397, cleaning staff and guests describing figures, feeling watched alone at night, corridor footsteps, cold spots, doors and sounds — repeated across decades in Göteborg ghost lists. PARANORMAL CREATORS: Swedish teams including LaxTon Ghost Sweden are commonly cited in regional haunted-hotel discussions; Haunted Sweden treats prior videos as media folklore, not scientific proof. NOTABLE AREAS: Room 397, historic corridors, staircases, lobby/reception. SCORING (editorial): Visual 9/10, Historical 10/10, Folklore 9.5/10, Paranormal reputation 9/10, Overnight 10/10. FUTURE MISSION: licensed overnight in 397, EVP, night photography, staff interviews, archive research, LaxTon comparison — premium EXTREMELY HIGH. BEST CONDITIONS: overnight stay, rain, winter dark, quiet weekdays, after midnight in corridors (with permission).
